We Want A New Twisted Metal Game... Please!!

We’ve got some insight into a canceled Twisted Metal game thanks to the portfolio of a lead UI programmer from Firesprite, one of Sony’s studios impacted by layoffs in 2024. According to the details shared (and spotted by MP1st), this project was shaping up to be a "third-person vehicular action combat game" blending "third-person shooter elements with vehicle-based combat, where the goal was to be the last one standing." Sounds a lot like a battle royale to me—though, to be fair, Twisted Metal has always had a bit of that last-man-standing vibe, even before the genre blew up.

It’s easy to see Sony looking at this and thinking, “Hey, this already feels like a trendy battle royale—let’s lean into that and cash in.” What’s less clear is why it included on-foot shooting action, as hinted by some fuzzy screenshots in the programmer’s portfolio. I could picture a Twisted Metal where you step out of your car, but only to get hilariously flattened by a maniac in a souped-up ice cream truck.

Sony’s big plan was to roll out 10 live-service games by its 2025 fiscal year, and this Twisted Metal battle royale was likely part of that push. With the Twisted Metal TV show gaining traction (season two is in the works), now would’ve been a perfect time to drop a tie-in game. But apparently, that wasn’t in the cards—just like how Bethesda couldn’t capitalize on the Fallout series hype with anything fresh beyond Fallout 76. Tough breaks all around.
