The Midnight Pre-Patch: A New Era for World of Warcraft Begins in January

Blizzard Entertainment is not waiting long to kick off the next chapter of The Worldsoul Saga. The studio has confirmed that the Patch 12.0 pre-patch for the Midnight expansion will arrive on January 20, 2026. This update serves as a massive technical and narrative bridge, preparing Azeroth for the impending Void invasion of the Sunwell and the return to the elven homeland of Quel'Thalas.
The Devourer Ascends
The most shocking announcement contained in the patch notes is the arrival of the Devourer specialization for Demon Hunters. Since the class's inception in 2016, players have asked for a third spec. The Devourer is a mid-range DPS that uses "Void-Scaring," a new mechanic where the player consumes their own health to unleash devastating shadow-fire beams, only to leech that life back from their victims. To support this lore-bending shift, Void Elves can now finally be Demon Hunters, reflecting the desperate alliances being formed against the Void Lords.
Numerical Squish and Narrative Prologue
In addition to the flashy class additions, the pre-patch addresses the game's "stat inflation" through a comprehensive Stat Squish. By reducing health pools and damage numbers from the billions back down to the thousands, Blizzard is ensuring the game remains playable on a wider range of hardware. The update also introduces the Warband 2.0 system, which expands shared progress to include legacy reputations and specific profession recipes. The pre-patch event, "The Dimming of the Sun," will take place in the Ghostlands, serving as a prologue to the expansion and offering players exclusive Void-themed mounts and armor sets that will become unobtainable once Midnight fully launches.
