The Dark West: Everything We Learned About the Upcoming Occult Western ARPG

Published on: 3/13/2026
The developers behind The Dark West, an upcoming isometric Action RPG built in Unreal Engine 5, recently sat down on the Town Portal podcast to share a massive amount of new information. Combining classic ARPG systems with a gritty, occult Wild West setting, the game is aiming to make a splash later this year. Here is a comprehensive summary of everything revealed during the interview.
A Dark and Bloody Frontier
The Dark West leans heavily into a mature, violent interpretation of the Wild West fused with dark folklore.
Factions: Players will interact with two major factions: The Damned and The Order. The game tracks your choices via a behind-the-scenes meter, altering NPC reactions and dialogues without locking you out of crucial gameplay or items.
Alcohol System: In a unique twist on ARPG potions or PoE flasks, the game features a dedicated alcohol system. Drinks have varying potency and intoxication factors, and drinking too much can lead to severe debuffs like inverted controls.
Bounties: Players can hunt down unique elite enemies via Wanted Posters. These targets have humorous, period-appropriate names (like "Wyatt Herp") but will be notoriously difficult encounters with high rewards.
Gunslinging and "No Melee" Combat
The development team is prioritizing responsive, satisfying action with a few distinct departures from genre norms.
No Pure Melee: The Dark West will not feature any dedicated melee builds, at least not in early access. The devs shared that most melee builds in ARPGs end up being ranged screen clear builds in the end game anyways and melee does not fit the western theme that well. There will, however, be close-quarters combat that will rely on high-risk, high-reward weapons like shotguns.
Weapon Freedom: Early Access will launch with 12 weapon types (three classes of weapons, each with four base types). Additionally, every class can equip any weapon in the game, and spell damage scales directly off your base weapon damage to encourage hybrid builds.
Movement: The game is natively designed around WASD movement, though it will eventually fully support controllers. Players will also have a standard spacebar dodge, but each class possesses a thematic movement skill that overrides the base dodge.
Meaningful Loot and Poker Card Mechanics
The Dark West is determined to make dropping items exciting again, pushing back against the reliance on loot filters and heavy crafting.
Ground Loot Philosophy: The game is balanced around an offline, solo experience without trade. Because of this, drop rates for the best items are significantly more generous, ensuring players can realistically grind for their own "best-in-slot" gear. The ground loot should also be more meaningful. The devs shared that if you need a loot filter, then there are too many items.
Masterworks and Crafting: The highest tier of items are called "Masterworks." Something special that dark quest does is allow you to upgrade the base tiers of early-game Masterworks so they scale with your character into the endgame. This should help avoid leveling items that end up being useless in the endgame. Additionally, Tto maintain the thrill of drops, the crafting system adheres to two strict rules: you cannot remove a modifier, and you cannot reroll a modifier. There are other ways to augment and modify items, but there is no way to strip an item of all affixes. The intent is for ground loot to still feel good.
Poker and Tarot Cards: Instead of charms or idols, players will collect Poker and Tarot cards. By equipping specific combinations to form standard poker hands (like a Two Pair or a Royal Flush), players unlock massive scaling bonuses for their builds. There will also be non standard hands that are callbacks to famous poker hands from various western movies.
Endgame and Release Roadmap
Launch Content: The team is targeting the June Steam Next Fest for their first playable demo. The subsequent Early Access launch will feature approximately 40% of the overarching campaign.
Two Endgame Modes: Even in Early Access, the game will launch with two robust endgame systems. One is a compounding-difficulty, infinite descent mode (similar to Path of Exile's Delve), and the other is a randomized, resetting instance mode.
Monetization: The Dark West will be an upfront purchase with a traditional DLC/Expansion model. The developers confirmed it will not be a live-service game with seasons or microtransactions.
Summary
Ultimately, The Dark West is positioning itself as a refreshing departure from standard high-fantasy ARPGs. By blending a gritty, occult Western theme with deep, player-friendly mechanics—such as offline solo play, unique poker-based character building, and a strict no-microtransaction model—the developers are clearly crafting a passion project tailored for genre veterans. If the team can deliver on their ambitious Early Access goals this summer, The Dark West could quickly become a standout title in an increasingly crowded genre.
