Path of Exile: Curse of the Allflame Expansion Revealed — Full Breakdown

Published on: 7/20/2026
Grinding Gear Games has fully unveiled the details for Path of Exile's next massive expansion. Launching on July 25th, the Curse of the Allflame (Update 3.29) takes players under the sea for a brand-new oceanic league mechanic, introduces massive reworks to classic systems like Abyss and Legion, fundamentally changes how socket colors work, and introduces a brand-new Ascendancy class for the Scion.
Here is a complete breakdown of everything coming in Path of Exile: Curse of the Allflame.
The Curse of the Allflame League
The core mechanic of the new season revolves around underwater exploration with Corsair Captain Valerie and her ship's bound soul, Vesper.
Players will dive beneath the waves using a bathysphere and place Allflame Lanterns to carve out safe zones on the ocean floor. Outside the lantern's light, you will drown. Within the light, you can kill monsters, loot sunken treasures, and mine "Dead Man's Sulfur."
As you explore, you will collect nautical charts. You can piece together nine of these charts on Valerie's board to create a massive custom "Voyage" with interlocking modifiers (e.g., all equipment drops as gold, wildwood wisps empower enemies).
Back on the ship, Vesper uses your collected Dead Man's Sulfur for a powerful new crafting system. If you use a currency item (like an Exalted Orb or Fossil) alongside sulfur, Vesper generates multiple "ghostly" outcomes of that craft, allowing you to choose the single best result to keep. The seafloor also hides rare Ducats, which can completely warp items—such as duplicating an item into four copies that each retain one specific modifier.
The Return of Mercenaries and The Luminary
The highly popular Mercenaries of Trathus are returning to Wraeclast as a core mechanic. Starting in Act 3, you can wager gold to duel these roaming warriors. If you win, you claim their loot and they become a temporary ally in your maps.
However, the Scion is getting a brand-new Ascendancy class tailored specifically for this mechanic: The Luminary. The Luminary acts as a commander, able to permanently hire up to three mercenaries. Even better, The Luminary can directly equip these mercenaries with custom gear and unique items, fundamentally allowing players to design custom AI companions to clear maps for them.
Huge Reworks: Abyss, Legion, and Talismans
To ensure older league mechanics feel modern and rewarding, GGG is rolling out massive overhauls:
Abyss: The days of chasing a crack backward through a map are over. Abyssal pits are now already open; killing enemies near them feeds their souls into the pit, eventually drawing out the Abyssal Legion. Abyss is now the exclusive source of Abyssal Jewels and Stygian Vises, and the mechanic is getting a brand-new pinnacle boss.
Legion: Incubators have been completely removed. Instead, Legion now drops Enshrouding Crystals. You can use these crystals on Unique items and take them into the Domain of Timeless Conflict. By killing enemies, the crystal will fracture and apply a "vestigial implicit modifier" from the original unique item onto a completely different unique item.
Talismans: Talismans are now exclusive rewards from Bestiary Red Beasts. Crucially, they no longer drop corrupted (allowing you to craft on them), and their special modifiers are now enchantments, meaning they compete with Blight anointments rather than implicit modifiers.
Socket Colors Abolished and Atlas Anomalies
In one of the most radical foundational changes in the game's history, gem socket color restrictions have been removed. You can now place any color skill or support gem into any socket, completely eliminating the frustration of finding a gear upgrade you cannot equip. Colored sockets still exist, but only as a bonus—putting a green gem into a green socket now grants an additional quality bonus to that gem.
The endgame Atlas is also changing with the introduction of Anomalies. These are special, randomized locations that manifest on your map device (such as the Nameless Seer, Reflecting Mists, or a returning Cadiro Perandus who trades items for gold). These are completely independent of your Atlas Passive Tree and can be saved and run at your leisure.
Spellcaster Buffs and Pacts
Finally, self-cast spellcasters are getting a major tune-up. Spells have been rebalanced by element (Shadow physical spells have higher crit, pure Lightning spells cast faster but cost more mana).
The expansion also introduces Pacts—a new type of exceptional skill gem themed around Beyond demons. These spells do not have a traditional mana cost; instead, casting them inflicts a unique affliction debuff on the player in exchange for massive, screen-melting power.
A New Era for Wraeclast
By entirely stripping away the archaic socket color restrictions, bringing back Mercenaries with a dedicated Ascendancy class, and delivering a massive oceanic crafting and exploration loop, Update 3.29 is poised to radically shake up the standard ARPG grind. Whether you are returning to build out a custom AI army or test the new spellcasting Pacts, the wait is almost over. Path of Exile: Curse of the Allflame is officially available to play tomorrow, July 24th!
