Path of Exile 3.28 "Mirage" Update Will Address the Ground Loot Debate and Refresh the Campaign

With the highly anticipated release of Path of Exile 3.28 quickly approaching, players are buzzing about the new "Mirage" league mechanics and a much-needed overhaul to the game's endgame Atlas. In a recent interview, Grinding Gear Games (GGG) game director Mark Roberts and game designer Christopher "Octavian" Laferriere shed some light on the team's philosophy regarding the eternal debate over "ground loot" and their efforts to make the base campaign feel fresh again.
The Mirage League Mechanic
At the core of the 3.28 update is the new Mirage system. This mechanic creates a temporary, "imperfect copy" of a portion of your current map, bringing twisted, astral-infused versions of nearby league mechanics and objects into the fray.
Octavian highlighted two specific mechanics that players should seek out while exploring Mirages:
Blight Encounters: Interacting with Blight inside a Mirage will reward players with a new belt that can be anointed, adding a powerful layer of customization for entrenched players.
Delirium: This interaction drops a specific currency that allows players to change enchantments on cluster jewels, opening the door for meticulous, min-max crafting previously impossible with existing modifiers.
Map Bosses: For newer players, engaging map bosses within a Mirage is highly recommended. These bosses will utilize new "astral hazards" and have a chance to drop uniquely enchanted maps that are completely covered in a Mirage effect.
The Ground Loot Tipping Point
One of the most persistent complaints from the PoE community is the feeling that actual "ground loot" (items dropped directly by monsters) is less valuable than rewards gained from crafting, chests, or specific league mechanics like Kingsmarch shipping.
Roberts acknowledged this as an "ebb and flow" situation that has existed since the dawn of the game. He explained that when GGG nerfs the extreme loot explosions of past leagues (like Necropolis or Affliction) to keep the core game balanced, it creates a perception of constant nerfing. This, combined with the buffing of specific, non-combat reward systems, has led to a tipping point where ground loot feels unrewarding.
While the new Mirage mechanics "will certainly" provide a boost to ground loot, Roberts stressed that GGG is fully "aware of the problem" in the long term. However, he cautioned that adjusting the base drop rates is a delicate process with a very small margin of error. "If you make the wrong decision and tilt something in the wrong place that's really bad... you do some irreparable damage," he noted, confirming the team is listening to player feedback and working on a comprehensive plan.
Spicing Up the Campaign
While Path of Exile updates typically focus heavily on endgame mapping, 3.28 will introduce new reasons to pay attention during the main story campaign. The update adds roughly 20 hidden "side rooms" scattered throughout the acts, offering small power boosts to players who take the time to find them.
Roberts emphasized that GGG wants to ensure players who only return to play through the campaign—without pushing deep into the endgame—still get an enhanced, fresh experience. Moving forward, the team intends to make campaign refreshes a regular part of their league routine, ensuring the world of Wraeclast doesn't feel stale on repeat playthroughs.
