Path of Exile 2: "Return of the Ancients" Reveals Massive Endgame Overhaul, Legacy Reworks, and the Road to 1.0

Published on: 5/8/2026
Grinding Gear Games has officially pulled the curtain back on the colossal 0.5.0 update for Path of Exile 2. Titled "Return of the Ancients," this patch is billed as the largest expansion ever released for either game in the franchise. The update fundamentally restructures the entire endgame experience, delivering deep mechanical overhauls to legacy leagues, introducing an entirely new paradigm for Atlas progression, and bringing a wave of quality-of-life updates that will redefine how players navigate Wraeclast. With the bombshell announcement that this will be the final Early Access league before the game's official 1.0 launch, the developers are pulling no punches.
The Runes of Aldur and Kalguuran Magic
At the heart of the new update is the "Runes of Aldur" league mechanic. Players will meet Farrow, a young blacksmith attempting to revive the ancient Ezomyte art of Rune Forging. Throughout the world, players will encounter ancient relics where they can slot specific runic symbols to craft powerful items and currency. However, this ancient magic comes at a steep cost: activating a relic resurrects nearby corpses into powerful undead horrors, heavily buffing them with elemental affinities based on the exact runes used in the crafting recipe.
As the league's narrative unfolds, players discover these runes actually originate from the Kalguur. Unlocking this ancient secret grants players access to "Rune-Ward," a brand-new defensive resource that acts as an emergency life pool to prevent lethal damage. More importantly, Rune-Ward fuels a completely new category of Kalguuran skills and support gems. Because these abilities cost Rune-Ward instead of mana and lack color restrictions, they completely bypass traditional attribute and weapon requirements, opening up wild new hybrid build possibilities for every class.
This Kalguuran magic eventually evolves into a brand-new endgame crafting mechanic that finally solves the problem of obsolete low-level gear. Deep within the Act 3 jungle, Farrow learns the ability to Runeforge unique weapons. This technique allows players to take fascinating low-level uniques and scale their damage significantly, hopefully making them viable for the endgame. Furthermore, all Kalguuran unique items can be Runeforged to unlock incredibly powerful secondary effects, giving players a massive new incentive to hunt down and upgrade classic gear.
Legacy Mechanics Completely Reimagined
Grinding Gear Games has completely updated four of its most iconic legacy leagues from the ground up, outfitting each with massive new crafting systems and dedicated story arcs. The Expedition mechanic has been vastly expanded into a naval exploration system. By using logbooks, players can dispatch ships across the southern ocean, exploring uncharted islands filled with explosive volcanic sulfite and massive bosses like Uhtred, the Star-drinker, whose defeat summons a meteor filled with ultra-pure Verisium.
Breach has been equally transformed with the introduction of the Genesis Tree. By stabilizing breaches and keeping the otherworldly portals open, players can harvest Swarmblood from elite demons. This blood is used to cultivate Seedpods in the Genesis Tree, a deep, 15-point crafting interface that allows players to specifically farm, modify, and forge incredibly powerful custom amulets and rings. Meanwhile, Delirium introduces a grueling new UI depth-tracker and Liquid Emotions, a new currency used to directly enchant jewels with highly specific modifiers. Reaching the climax of the Delirium questline allows players to consume a Strange Fruit, triggering an Atlas-wide fog that plunges them into a boss fight against Tangmazu, the Raven Swindler.
Ritual offers perhaps the most punishing new gauntlet with the Rite of the Nameless. After securing a statue piece from a map boss, players must chain together five consecutive maps. The catch is that the monsters and bosses from each previous map stack onto the next. By the final map, players will be facing down a completely overwhelming horde alongside five simultaneous map bosses just to earn the right to challenge the Nameless King and the ancient Bodach hidden beneath the Gloomwood.
A Fully Allocatable Atlas and the Masters
To support these massive mechanics, the core mapping experience has been rebuilt. Deep within the endgame, an ancient protocol causes a gigantic, multi-tier Pioneer fortress to erupt from the ground. Exploring this fortress and neutralizing its threats grants points toward the newly redesigned Atlas tree. In a shocking twist, Grinding Gear Games revealed that dedicated players will eventually be able to allocate every single passive point on the entire Atlas board, eliminating the need to constantly respec between farming strategies.
To retain player choice and specialization, the developers are introducing "Masters of the Atlas," which essentially function as Ascendancy classes for your mapping experience. Players can align with NPCs like Jado of the Order of the Djinn or Hilda the Monster Hunter, completing missions to unlock exclusive, game-altering modifiers. These Masters appear at the edge of your screen before you open a map, allowing you to instantly toggle their specific loadouts to tailor your rewards and difficulty on the fly.
The Spiritwalker and the Martial Artist
Combat variety is expanding with the introduction of two highly anticipated Ascendancy classes. The Ranger can now specialize as the Spiritwalker, a mystical summoner who channels the power of Azmeri animal spirits. Players can call upon the Stag to trigger stampedes on attack, the Owl for massive projectile speed buffs, or the Bear to serve as a ferocious frontline tank. The Spiritwalker's true masterstroke, however, is a late-game passive that allows her to permanently tame actual map bosses, transforming Sanctuary's most terrifying threats into loyal companions.
The Monk roster is expanding with the Martial Artist, an unarmed specialist who has mastered the esoteric techniques of the Void. This Ascendancy can channel shadowy clones to clear massive hordes, harden their own body with stone to absorb heavy damage, and manifest spiritual bells that detonate for massive area-of-effect damage upon landing critical hits. The Martial Artist also features a unique equipment interaction that allows them to transform their gloves into literal stone fists, replacing the item's original modifiers with massively amplified brawling stats.
Game-Changing New Unique Items
With five new endgame bosses, the developers are introducing a staggering arsenal of new Unique items designed to break the game's conventional rules. The highly coveted Voices jewel from the original game is making a return, allowing players to sacrifice a single jewel socket to generate up to four entirely new sockets on their passive tree. For minion enthusiasts, Sylvan's Effigy is a new scepter that completely removes the cap on companion types while granting a permanent Azmeri Wolf that howls to buff allies.
Spellcasters have access to Boundary Winding, an incredibly strange wand that allows players to apply an infinite number of curses that have absolutely zero effect on enemies. However, the wand grants massive physical and chaos damage scaling based on the number of curses applied, and causes projectiles to violently split and chain between cursed targets. Melee fighters can hunt for Distorted Light-Sky, a massive two-handed mace that converts all fire damage to cold and grants a divine leap attack that rains metallic bolts down from the stratosphere.
New Quality of Life and Visual Signposting
Navigating the campaign and the complex world of build-crafting has never been smoother thanks to sweeping quality-of-life updates. Grinding Gear Games is introducing subtle, immersive visual signposting directly into the game world to guide players. Swarms of locusts will intuitively lead players toward hidden Ritual encounters, gruesome blood trails left by scavenging crows point directly to boss arenas, and glowing fissures in the earth naturally guide wanderers toward Abyssal Depths.
Outside of combat, the studio is introducing a massive new utility for theorycrafters: an officially supported, in-game build planner. Content creators can now export their custom guides as specific files that players can download and import directly into the game client. Once loaded, the game will automatically highlight exactly which passives to take, which skill gems to equip, and display custom notes detailing stat priorities and level-by-level progression tips. Combined with a new feature that allows players to instantly price-check items on the trade market by hitting Shift and Alt, managing a character has never been more intuitive.
The Future is Coming
The "Return of the Ancients" update, launching on May 29, is a transformative milestone for Path of Exile 2. By delivering a sprawling, quest-driven endgame, deep Kalguuran rune crafting, totally reimagined legacy leagues, and brilliant quality-of-life features, Grinding Gear Games has set the ultimate stage for the future. With the development team confirming that 0.5.0 is the final Early Access league, all eyes are now firmly set on the game's full 1.0 release following ExileCon later this year.
