Following a massive resurgence fueled by its recent co-op update, Moon Studios is setting its sights on an extraordinarily ambitious future for No Rest for the Wicked. According to recent comments from CEO and Creative Director Thomas Mahler, the team isn't just looking to finish their action RPG—they are hoping to transform it into an ever-expanding "forever game."

A Staggering Comeback

While No Rest for the Wicked experienced a somewhat rocky launch in Early Access back in 2024, the ARPG has recently enjoyed a massive second wind. Following the release of the multiplayer "Together" update in late January, the game shifted an incredible 500,000 copies in a matter of weeks, rocketing from 1 million to 1.5 million total sales.

Mahler recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to discuss the financial stability this success has brought to the indie studio, noting that in a few short days, the game generated more revenue than it takes to run the entire studio for a month.

The "Forever Game" Vision

While Mahler reassured fans that traditional ARPG expansions—featuring new story chapters, cinematics, and explorable zones—are still the core focus, he revealed that the team plans to aggressively experiment with entirely new genres between those major drops.

"In-between those expansions, me and some of my design team will always keep trying to push new ways of play into Wicked in order to potentially create that 'forever game' that many of us have always been dreaming of," Mahler stated.

Rivaling Games like Hades

Because Moon Studios spent years painstakingly polishing the game's weighty, soulslike combat system, Mahler believes they have a massive head start when it comes to tackling other genres.

He explicitly pointed to the rogue-like genre, suggesting that if the team fully committed to building a rogue-like mode within the game, they could create something that rivals Hades.

Furthermore, Mahler addressed the survival genre, noting that many popular survival games feel "a bit stuck" because they lack an "insanely rich combat system." By leaning on the established mechanics of No Rest for the Wicked, he proposed that Moon Studios could easily create a survival experience with combat as deep and satisfying as Elden Ring.

One Massive Platform

Crucially, Mahler clarified that these ambitious ideas are not teases for entirely new, separate games. Instead, the intention is to build these diverse modes directly into No Rest for the Wicked.

By treating the game as a versatile platform rather than a static campaign, Moon Studios hopes to create a singular, endlessly replayable world. If the team can execute this grand vision, No Rest for the Wicked is poised to be much more than just a successful ARPG—it could become the definitive mechanical playground for years to come.
