Major Overhaul for The Elder Scrolls Online: Seasons, Free Content, and New Rewards

Published on: 1/8/2026
The Elder Scrolls Online is entering a transformative new era in 2026. In a major announcement, ZeniMax Online Studios revealed that the long-running MMORPG is shifting to a quarterly seasonal model, effectively dismantling the traditional paid expansion structure in favor of free content updates for all players.
No More Paid Chapters
The most significant change is the removal of paid "Chapters" and DLC zones. Going forward, all new playable content—including new areas, game modes, and features—will be free. This move is designed to unify the player base, ensuring that everyone can play together without being separated by paywalls.
To kickstart this transition, previously paid DLCs like the Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, and Orsinium will be rolled into the base game for free starting with Update 49 in March 2026. Additionally, updates will now launch simultaneously across PC, Mac, and consoles, ending the delay for console players.
Introducing "Seasons"
The game will officially adopt a seasonal model, with "Season Zero" launching on April 2, 2026. Executive Producer Susan Kath emphasized that the team wants to avoid a rigid formula, aiming instead for variety and experimentation. This new flexibility allows the developers to address community pain points and implement feedback more quickly than before.
"Tamriel Tomes": The New Reward System
Replacing the daily login rewards and the Endeavor system is a new feature called Tamriel Tomes, which functions similarly to a Battle Pass. Players will earn "Tome Points" by completing challenges, which can be spent to unlock rewards in any order they choose.
Free Track: Available to everyone.
Premium ($14.99): Offers additional rewards to earn.
Premium Plus ($29.99): Includes all premium benefits plus extra bonuses.
Both paid tiers remove the seasonal time limit for unlocking rewards, allowing players to progress at their own pace.
The Gold Coast Bazaar
Arriving on March 25, the Gold Coast Bazaar is a new marketplace that allows players to purchase past limited-time collectibles that have been unavailable for years. These items can be bought with Trade Bars, a new currency that replaces Event Tickets.
Trade Bars can be earned through the Tamriel Tomes system (up to 9,000 per season on the free track) and via in-game events. Notably, Trade Bars cannot be purchased directly with Crowns, preserving the in-game effort required to obtain these rare items.
Looking Ahead
This pivot marks the end of the "transition year" teased in late 2024. With a focus on transparency, the developers have promised earlier looks at upcoming content, more streams, and increased opportunities for player feedback to shape the game's future.
For veteran players and newcomers alike, 2026 promises to be one of the most accessible and content-rich years in the history of The Elder Scrolls Online.
