Eldegarde: From Extraction Roots to a Reimagined "Mini-MMO" Experience

Published on: 12/22/2025
When Notorious Studios first revealed Legacy: Steel and Sorcery, it was positioned as a high-stakes entry into the trending PvPvE extraction genre. However, following an intense period of Early Access feedback and internal reflection, the studio—founded by legendary former Blizzard developers—has announced a massive pivot. The game has been rebranded as Eldegarde, and it now has a definitive 1.0 launch date: January 21, 2026.
Key Features of Eldegarde 1.0:
New PvE Mode: Full progression without the threat of player-vs-player combat.
Class Expansion: Introduction of the Wizard (ranged DPS) and Paladin (tank/support).
Rebranded Social Hubs: Centralized cities for player trading and group formation.
Dynamic World Quests: Real-time events that trigger based on server-wide monster kills.
Visual Overhaul: Updated lighting and assets to match the new dark fantasy tone.
A Shift Toward Cooperative Fantasy
The rebrand is far more than a marketing face-lift. The developers acknowledged that while the "extraction" loop provided tension, a large portion of the player base was more enamored with the game’s combat feel and world-building than the constant threat of being hunted by other players. Consequently, the 1.0 release will introduce a dedicated PvE-only mode. This allows players to treat Eldegarde as a cooperative "mini-MMO," where they can crawl through dungeons, hoard loot, and level up their characters in a persistent world without the risk of losing everything to a player-controlled ambush.
Expanding the Arsenal and the World
The studio is also doubling down on the "living world" aspect. The 1.0 update will introduce a revamped social hub where players can trade, form adventuring parties, and pick up dynamic "World Quests" that change based on community progress. This shift toward a more traditional RPG structure is supported by the arrival of the Paladin and Wizard classes. The Wizard, in particular, introduces a high-skill ceiling with "spell-weaving," where the order of incantations creates different elemental outcomes. By moving away from the "hardcore-only" niche, Eldegarde aims to capture the same sense of wonder found in early 2000s fantasy RPGs, while maintaining the modern, fluid combat mechanics that made its Early Access phase so promising.
