In Dune: Awakening, base-building is at the heart of survival on Arrakis, and Funcom’s latest developer stream provided a deep dive into the skills needed to not only construct a base but also expand it in a world that demands strategic planning.
Drawing from their experience with Conan Exiles, Funcom has crafted a robust and adaptive building system that reflects the unforgiving nature of the desert planet. Players begin with a sub-fief console, a small shelter that offers basic protection, including shielding from the scorching sun. From there, progression is gradual, driven by crafting advancements and resource management.

Survival Through Smart Base Expansion
Expanding a base isn't simply about constructing more walls—it requires mastering a range of essential mechanics:
Shield management
Power consumption and capacity
Water storage
Storm alerts and environmental hazards
As skills improve, so do survival tactics. Advanced players will unlock deeper technologies, including the ability to refine blood into precious water, a crucial method to endure Arrakis’ merciless landscape.
Strategic Growth and Cooperative Play
Growth, however, has its limits. Expansion eventually leads to encounters with other players’ bases, making strategy essential. While solo play is an option, joining forces in co-op building allows for larger, more fortified structures—and possibly even collective alliances that shift the game's dynamic.
