Dragonkin: The Banished Reimagines Combat with New "Spender-Only" System

In the crowded landscape of Action RPGs, standing out requires more than just flashy loot and dark environments—it requires a mechanical identity. Eko Software, the developers behind the upcoming ARPG Dragonkin: The Banished, recently shared a deep dive into how they are reshaping the game's core combat loop. The headline? A bold move toward a "Spender-Only" system.

Moving Away from the "Generator-Spender" Trope

For years, the ARPG genre has been dominated by the "Generator-Spender" rhythm: use a weak, free skill to build up a resource, then unleash a powerful skill to spend it. While effective, it can often lead to repetitive "1-1-1-2" gameplay patterns.

In their latest Steam devblog, the team at Eko Software explained that they are moving away from this traditional model. Instead of forcing players to manage a mana or energy bar through basic attacks, Dragonkin: The Banished is pivoting toward a system where every skill is a "Spender."

How the Spender-Only System Works

In this new ecosystem, skills don't rely on a global mana pool. Instead, the focus shifts to Cooldown Management and Tactical Synergies. Here is how the developers are approaching the change:

Skill Charges: Many abilities now operate on a charge-based system. This encourages players to rotate through their entire kit rather than spamming a single "best" move.

Dynamic Cooldowns: Certain actions or sub-skills can reduce the cooldown of others. This creates a "flow" state where using one ability correctly sets up the next, rewarding players who understand their build's internal logic.

The Ancestral Grid Connection: This combat shift is intrinsically tied to the game's unique Ancestral Grid. By slotting different "Life Crystals" and modifiers, players can fundamentally change how these spenders behave—turning a high-cooldown nuke into a more frequent utility spell, or vice versa.

Why the Change?

The developers noted that the previous system felt "restrictive" and often hindered the fast-paced, visceral feeling they wanted for the game. By removing the need to "farm" resource with weak attacks, every button press feels impactful. It places the emphasis on positioning and timing rather than just resource monitoring.

What This Means for Players

For fans of the genre, this means Dragonkin: The Banished is leaning closer to a "brawler" feel within an ARPG framework. You won't find yourself running out of mana and clicking fruitlessly on a boss; instead, you'll be managing the rhythm of your strikes and looking for the optimal window to unleash your high-damage rotations.

This change is a clear signal that Eko Software is listening to playtest feedback and isn't afraid to rip up the "standard" ARPG playbook to find a more engaging experience.

Dragonkin: The Banished is currently slated for a 2026 release. Be sure to wishlist it on Steam to stay up to date with the latest "Ancestral" updates.
