Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred Announced – Release Date, New Classes, and Key Features

Published on: 12/11/2025
Blizzard Entertainment has officially unveiled the next major expansion for Diablo IV, titled Lord of Hatred. Scheduled to launch on April 28, 2026, the expansion promises a massive evolution of the game, continuing the dark saga of Sanctuary while introducing highly requested features, classes, and regions.
Here is everything you need to know about the announcement.
The Return of the Paladin
One of the biggest reveals is the return of a fan-favorite class: the Paladin. Described as the "sword and board" archetype, the Paladin brings back divine authority to Sanctuary with a playstyle focused on strength, faith, and holy magic.
Classic Skills: Iconic abilities like Blessed Hammer, Blessed Shield, Condemn, Zeal, and Heaven’s Fury make a return.
Oath System: A new mechanic reflecting the specific code of faith a Paladin swears to uphold.
Available Now: Players who pre-purchase the Lord of Hatred expansion can start playing the Paladin class immediately.
Blizzard also teased a second new class that remains a secret but will be playable when the expansion launches in 2026.
New Region: Skovos
The map of Sanctuary is expanding to the legendary Skovos Isles, a region steeped in ancient history. Described as "waterlogged as Hell," the zone ranges from volcanic terrain in the west to deep forests in the east. It is the birthplace of Sanctuary’s firstborn civilization and the former home of Lilith and Inarius. Players can expect to battle horrors from the sea and sinister cultists in this new environment.
Major Gameplay Overhaul
Lord of Hatred is set to introduce the most comprehensive gameplay updates since the game's launch:
Skill Tree Reworks: All eight classes are receiving major updates, including new skill variants.
New Systems: A fresh take on the Horadric Cube for crafting and a new Talisman system for set bonuses.
Loot Filter: A highly requested quality-of-life feature is finally being added.
Level Cap Increase: The level cap will be raised for all players, regardless of whether they own the expansion.
Endgame Revamp: War Plans & Echoing Hatred
The endgame is moving toward more player agency and escalating challenges:
War Plans: This new system allows players to create a "playlist" of their preferred activities with strategic modifiers to earn higher-value rewards.
Echoing Hatred: A new mode where players face endless, escalating waves of demons to test their builds and strategy.
The Story Continues
The narrative picks up after the events of Vessel of Hatred. Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred and Prime Evil, is now walking Sanctuary disguised as the prophet Akarat. His goal is not just domination but "absolute corruption," forcing players to gather unlikely allies to stop him in the very place Sanctuary was born.
A Surprise Addition: Fishing
In a lighter twist, Blizzard confirmed that fishing is coming to Diablo IV. It is described as a "soothing" feature to balance out the demon slaying, reinforcing the developers' tongue-in-cheek claim that Diablo is a "cozy game."
Release & Pre-Purchase
Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred releases April 28, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC (Battle.net & Steam), and PlayStation 5. Pre-orders are available now and include instant access to the Paladin class as well as the previous expansion, Vessel of Hatred.
