Diablo Immortal Adds Cross-Region Matchmaking to Improve PvP Experience

Published on: 1/23/2026
Blizzard has officially rolled out the first phase of a major improvement to Diablo Immortal's Battleground matchmaking. Aiming to solve long-standing issues with queue times and match balance, the new update introduces cross-region play between North and South American servers.
This update, which is available now globally, marks the first step in a broader plan to expand the player pool and create a smoother PvP experience, particularly during off-peak hours.
Solving the Matchmaking Puzzle
The primary goal of this update is to reduce wait times and improve match quality by significantly expanding the pool of available players. By merging the matchmaking pools for North and South America, the developers hope to ensure that players can find games faster, regardless of when they log in.
The update also introduces smarter team composition logic:
Class Diversity: The system will now prioritize placing different classes on separate teams.
Avoiding Mirrors: It will also attempt to separate similar classes, ensuring that teams have greater variety rather than stacking the same class repeatedly.
Handling Latency Concerns
Acknowledging that connecting players across continents can introduce lag, Blizzard has implemented safeguards. If the matchmaker finds enough players within your local region, it will prioritize local servers to ensure the most stable connection possible. Cross-region servers will likely be utilized primarily when local pools are insufficient to form a match quickly.
Additional Changes in this Update
Beyond matchmaking, the patch includes several other quality-of-life and balance changes:
Expanded Battleground Hours: To accommodate the new cross-region flow, Battleground availability windows have been expanded, giving players more opportunities to jump into PvP.
Gem Stacking: Players can now stack normal Gems up to 9,999, a massive inventory management improvement that also applies to listing items on the market.
Class Balance: Three classes—Crusader, Demon Hunter, and Druid—have received balance adjustments in this patch.
Blizzard has stated that this is only "Phase One." The team will be closely monitoring data and player feedback before rolling out cross-region matchmaking to additional regions in the future.
