A massive ARPG expansion wouldn't be complete without entirely new ways to hoard, manage, and upgrade gear. Fortunately, the Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred developer update outlined a sweeping itemization revamp that will affect both Eternal and Seasonal realms. By reintroducing iconic Diablo artifacts and delivering highly requested quality-of-life tools, Blizzard is preparing to radically elevate the game's power ceiling.

The Talisman System and the Return of the Horadric Cube

The hunt for the perfect build is expanding far beyond standard armor slots with the introduction of the Talisman system. Composed of base Seals and insertable Charms, this system allows players to drastically alter their combat capabilities. Finding and equipping Set Charms in Torment difficulties will unlock massive, class-defining playstyles that function independently of traditional gear.

For true min-maxers, the legendary Horadric Cube is making a triumphant return for deep endgame crafting. The Cube enables Transmutation, allowing players to upgrade rare materials and push base items all the way up to legendary rarity. The most powerful feature of the Cube, however, is Transfiguration. This risky crafting process allows players to forcibly graft additional legendary powers onto already powerful items. There is even a dedicated Transfiguration recipe specifically for Amulets, letting players roll an extra legendary power onto their neckpiece for an astronomical power boost. To combat the chaos of RNG, players can apply an Entropic Tuning Prism to guarantee a stable, clean upgrade at the cost of a slightly lower maximum stat ceiling.

A Modern Approach to Quality of Life

Alongside the crafting overhauls, the game's foundational math and inventory systems are getting a much-needed tune-up. The global level cap has been increased to 70, and damage multipliers have been reworked to stack additively with themselves while remaining multiplicative to the enemy's health pool, preventing the system from entirely breaking the game's math. To help manage the resulting influx of powerful gear, inventory stack sizes for materials have been vastly increased to a generous limit of 1,000.

Perhaps the most universally celebrated addition is the introduction of a highly customizable Loot Filter and a new transparent Map Overlay. The Loot Filter allows power users to entirely hide useless ground items or specifically recolor text for drops featuring their most desired affixes. Paired with the new Map Overlay—which moves the minimap out of the corner and places a transparent, customizable navigation route directly over the center of the screen—players will finally be able to process complex visual information without breaking their combat flow.

Who’s Ready to Cube?

The Lord of Hatred expansion is injecting an incredible amount of depth into Diablo 4's itemization and crafting mechanics. The return of the Horadric Cube and the introduction of the new Talisman system provide limitless chasing potential for endgame players, while the addition of the Loot Filter and Map Overlay ensures that the moment-to-moment gameplay remains as clean and readable as possible.
