Defenses 101

Published on: 3/1/2025
In Last Epoch, defenses are all about keeping your character alive amidst hordes of enemies, massive bosses, and deadly mechanics. The game offers a variety of defensive layers that you can mix and match based on your playstyle, class, and gear. Let’s break down how defenses work and how to build them effectively.
Core Defensive Mechanics
Your survivability in Last Epoch comes from a combination of health, damage mitigation, and avoidance. Here are the key components:
Health:
Your primary resource for staying alive. Base health starts low (varies by class) but grows with levels and gear.
Increased by Vitality (+8 Health per point) and flat "+Health" affixes on gear (e.g., "+50 Health").
Effective Health: How much damage you can actually take, factoring in mitigation (more on that below).

Damage Mitigation:
Reduces incoming damage before it hits your health.
Armor: Mitigates Physical damage only. Scales with a formula: higher armor = diminishing returns against big hits. Boosted by Strength (+4% per point) and "+Armor" affixes.
Resistances: Reduce Elemental (Fire, Cold, Lightning), Void, Necrotic, and Poison damage. Capped at 75% without special effects. Each attribute gives +1% to a resistance (e.g., Intelligence for Elemental).
Endurance: A flat % damage reduction (default 20%) that applies to all damage types, but only kicks in below a health threshold (default 20% of max health). Boost with "+Endurance" or "Endurance Threshold."

Avoidance:
Prevents damage entirely.
Dodge Chance: % chance to avoid hits entirely (base 0%, rare on gear/passives).
Block Chance: % chance to block Physical damage with a shield, reducing it by a Block Effectiveness value.
Glancing Blow: 30% base chance (for all characters) to reduce hit damage by 35%. Can be increased with gear/passives.

Wards:
A temporary shield above your health pool that decays over time (10% per second unless modified).
Common for Mages and some Acolyte builds. Boosted by Intelligence (+4 Ward per point) and "+Ward on Spell Cast" effects.

Healing & Regeneration:
Health Regen: Restores health over time (base is low, increased by "+Health Regeneration").
Leech: Heals based on damage dealt (e.g., "2% of Physical Damage Leeched as Health").
Potions: Instant health recovery (3 charges, refills at waypoints or kills).

Damage Over Time Mitigation:
Poison, Bleed, and other DoTs bypass traditional mitigation. Counter with "+Poison Resistance," "Reduced Damage Over Time Taken," or cleansing skills.
Defensive Layers in Practice
You don’t rely on just one mechanic—effective defense stacks multiple layers. Here’s how they interact:
An enemy hits you for 100 Physical damage.
Glancing Blow (30% chance) might reduce it to 65.
Armor (e.g., 500) cuts that to ~40 (depends on hit size).
Endurance (20%) below threshold reduces it to 32.
Final damage: 32 to your health (or Ward if active).
Add resistances for Elemental/Void hits, and you see how layers compound.
Building Defenses
To survive Last Epoch’s endgame (like Monoliths and Dungeons), tailor your defenses to your class and threats. Here’s the process:
Know Your Threats:
Early game: Mostly Physical hits—armor and health suffice.
Endgame: Elemental, Void, and DoTs dominate—prioritize resistances and specific counters.
Core Stats:
Vitality: Universal health boost, good for all builds.
Strength: Armor for melee (Sentinel, Primalist).
Intelligence: Ward for casters (Mage, Acolyte).
Dexterity: Minor dodge boosts (Rogue).
Gear Affixes:
Health: "+Health" (flat) and "% Increased Health."
Resistances: "+All Resistances" or "+Fire Resistance" (aim for 75% cap).
Armor: "+Armor" or "% Increased Armor."
Ward: "+Ward per Second" or "+Ward on Kill."
Special: "Chance to Gain Ward on Hit," "+Block Chance" (with shields).
Passives & Masteries:
Invest in your class tree’s defensive nodes:
Sentinel (Paladin): Armor, block, healing.
Mage (Runemaster): Ward generation, Elemental resists.
Acolyte (Lich): Leech, damage reduction when low health.
Masteries often add unique defenses (e.g., Lich’s "Reaper Form" for immortality).
Skills:
Some skills have defensive bonuses:
Shield Bash (Sentinel): Stuns and blocks.
Teleport (Mage): Escape tool with Ward buffs.
Bone Curse (Acolyte): Enemies take damage when hitting you.
Crafting:
Use the crafting system to add "+Health," "+Resistances," or "+Armor" to gear. Prioritize resistances to hit the 75% cap.
Example Defensive Builds
Here’s how defenses might look for different classes:
Sentinel - Forge Guard (Tank):
Focus: High armor, block, and health.
Stats: Strength, Vitality.
Gear: Shield with "+Block Chance," "+Armor," "+Health."
Passives: "Juggernaut" (more armor), "Shield Wall" (block boosts).
Mage - Sorcerer (Ward-Based):
Focus: Ward and resistances.
Stats: Intelligence.
Gear: "+Ward on Spell Cast," "+Elemental Resistances."
Skills: Flame Ward (big Ward burst), passives for Ward retention.
Rogue - Bladedancer (Avoidance + Leech):
Focus: Dodge, leech, and mobility.
Stats: Dexterity, Vitality.
Gear: "+Dodge Chance," "+Physical Damage Leeched as Health."
Skills: Shadow Cascade + Shift for evasion.
Advanced Defense Tips
Cap Resistances: 75% is the baseline for endgame. Check your character sheet (C key) and fill gaps.
Endurance Threshold: Raise it (e.g., to 40% health) so mitigation kicks in sooner.
Hybrid Defenses: Combine Ward + Health or Armor + Resistances for versatility.
Ailment Protection: "+Poison Resistance" or "Chance to Cleanse on Hit" for DoTs.
Uniques: Items like "Bastion of Honour" (Sentinel) add massive armor/block.
Putting It Together
For a Primalist (Shaman) using Tornado:
Stack Vitality for health (~1,500+ endgame).
Gear for 75% Elemental Resistances (Tornado won’t save you from Lightning bosses).
Add Armor (500-1,000) for Physical hits.
Pick passives like "Thick Skin" (+Health) and "Natural Resistance."
Use a skill like Werebear Form for bonus health/armor.
You’ll tank hits while dishing out damage.
