Darkhaven: Former Diablo Creators Unveil "Next-Gen" Sandbox ARPG

Moonbeast Productions has officially unveiled its flagship title, Darkhaven, a next-generation action RPG (ARPG) developed by a team including original creators of Diablo and Diablo II. Promising to break away from modern genre tropes, the game combines classic hack-and-slash mechanics with a fully destructible, voxel-based open world.

A World You Can Reshape

The most ambitious feature of Darkhaven is its "fully deformable" terrain. Unlike traditional ARPGs with static maps, players can literally dig into the earth to harvest resources, tunnel through dungeon walls, or even redirect lava flows to create defensive moats. The building system allows players to raise land, construct bridges, and fortify settlements, making the environment itself a tool for survival.

This interactivity extends to exploration. The developers criticize the "hallway-and-room" logic of random generation, instead opting for an ecological system that stitches together biomes and handcrafted points of interest to create a cohesive, "living realm."

Combat and Movement Freedom

Moving away from the flat planes typical of isometric RPGs, Darkhaven emphasizes verticality. Players can jump, climb, swim, and dash, opening up new tactical possibilities. You can scale fortress walls to gain a height advantage or leap over incoming projectiles.

Combat is designed to be more than a "stat check," with monster AI that utilizes distinct behaviors rather than simply rushing the player. Success will depend on positioning and reading enemy cues as much as gear.

"No Green Arrow" Itemization

Moonbeast Productions is taking a firm stance against the "balanced banality" of modern loot systems. The game aims to avoid incremental upgrades (the "green arrow" problem) in favor of items that feel genuinely powerful.

  • Return of Complexity: The game will feature Runes (and Runewords), Relics, and build-defining Set items.

  • Trading Focus: Trading is described as a "cornerstone" of the experience, with finely tuned drop rates that make rare finds valuable for the entire community.

Multiplayer and Modding

Darkhaven supports a flexible multiplayer structure, ranging from solo play to "MMO-scale" interconnected realms. Players can host persistent worlds where changes to the landscape remain even when offline.

Furthermore, the game is built with total modding freedom in mind. An in-client editor will allow players to create items, classes, monsters, and quests in real-time, even while playing with others.

Release Details

Darkhaven is listed as "Coming Soon" on Steam. No specific release date or price has been announced yet. It will support English audio with subtitles in 12 additional languages. Additionally, according to their discord, a playable demo is slated to be available at Steam Next Fest on February 23rd.
