A Masterpiece That Refuses to Rest

After surpassing five million copies sold, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 stands as one of the most celebrated artistic RPGs of the past few years. But Sandfall Interactive isn’t done telling its story. The Montpellier-based studio has announced a major free update that will add a brand-new region, new late-game bosses, and a selection of cosmetics inspired by community feedback. It’s both a celebration of the game’s success and a thank-you note to the fans who helped turn an ambitious French RPG into a global hit.

The update will also expand localization support, bringing the game to an even wider audience. Languages such as Turkish, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Ukrainian, Czech, and Latin American Spanish are being added — a sign that Sandfall is committed to making Expedition 33 a truly worldwide experience.

A Studio Staying True to Its Vision

Despite the scale of its success, Creative Director Guillaume Broche insists the studio has no intention of chasing bigger teams or blockbuster budgets. “We want to remain small, focused, and independent,” he explains. “The best ideas come when you’re close to the work, not buried in layers of management.”

Producer François Meurisse echoes that sentiment, adding that the team’s strength lies in creative alignment — every artist, designer, and writer sharing the same goal of emotional authenticity. Their approach, he says, is less about competition and more about craft: creating games that leave an impression not through spectacle, but through beauty and meaning.

The Future: Beyond Expedition 33

While the update will give players plenty of reasons to return, Sandfall is already looking ahead. The team has confirmed that a new project — one set in the Clair Obscur universe — is already in early development. Details remain under wraps, but Broche has teased that it’s one of several “crazy projects” born from passion rather than profit.

Fans speculate that this could expand on the world’s surreal art-inspired mythology or even experiment with new gameplay perspectives. Whatever direction it takes, it’s clear the studio’s next steps will remain driven by the same creative energy that made Expedition 33 so distinctive.

Looking Ahead

The free content update is expected to launch in the coming months, though Sandfall has not yet announced a firm release date. With award season on the horizon, some fans are betting on a reveal during The Game Awards — fitting for a title that helped redefine how art and emotion can coexist within a role-playing game.

If Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was proof that beauty and challenge can share the same stage, its next chapter may show how far that vision can stretch. For Sandfall Interactive, the journey is far from over — it’s only growing bolder, stranger, and more heartfelt.
