Big Changes Coming To Season 8? Revamped?

Diablo 4 has now reached its seventh season—time sure zips by, doesn’t it? This action RPG keeps delivering on its live-service promise with a steady stream of fresh content, and players are still flocking to it, even with Path of Exile 2 recently stepping into the ring as a serious contender. In a recent chat, Diablo’s general manager Rod Fergusson dropped some intriguing hints about the game’s future, calling the classic seasonal battle pass model “outdated” and suggesting Diablo 4 might shake things up. He also mentioned that while the game’s armor sets and cosmetics have stuck to its gritty, hellish vibe so far, Blizzard’s ready to get a bit more “bold” and playful with its designs.
Season of Witchcraft, the current seventh season, stands out as one of the most creative and engaging yet. But it’s sticking around a bit longer than planned since Season 8’s launch got pushed back to give the devs extra time to polish it up. Diablo 4 isn’t the only Activision Blizzard title feeling the heat of live-service demands—Call of Duty Warzone and Black Ops 6 just saw their critical Season 3 update delayed by a couple of weeks too. It’s a brutal, non-stop grind, and those seasonal battle passes are a big part of the machine.
Fergusson, however, hinted at a revamp for Diablo 4’s battle passes, which right now follow a pretty straightforward, linear setup. Speaking to Game File, he said, “We think battle passes are probably an antiquated system now. There are better ways to make it fun and give players more control.” He pointed to the reward map system from Call of Duty MW2 and MW3 (ditched in Black Ops 6), where players could chart their own path to pick the goodies they wanted most, rather than slogging through a rigid 100-tier ladder. Keep an eye out, he teased—some fresh ideas are brewing.
On top of that, Fergusson wants to spice up Diablo 4’s cosmetics, moving beyond the “grounded” looks we’ve seen since launch toward something more “flamboyant.” He’s also keen on more crossover events, building on last year’s World of Warcraft tie-in. “We’re always talking about it,” he noted. Now, if Diablo 4 went as wild as Call of Duty—where you might see a squad of a Ninja Turtle, Nicki Minaj, Skeletor, and a wrestler—some fans might riot. But tasteful collabs that don’t just slap a celebrity face into the game could go over well.
Will these battle pass tweaks or flashier cosmetics hit with Season 8? Fergusson’s keeping mum for now, so we’ll just have to wait and see how it all unfolds.
