Ash & Rust Hits 1.0 With New Dungeons, Campaign Systems, and Major Overhauls

Published on: 3/14/2026

After seven years of development, Ash & Rust has officially launched version 1.0, marking the end of its early access period and a major milestone for the dark fantasy ARPG. In the launch update, the solo developer describes the project as the result of thousands of hours spent chasing a specific vision: a more modular character-building system, slower and more strategic combat, and broader playstyle variety than many traditional action RPGs offer. The game’s Steam listing also confirms that the full release arrived on March 13, 2026.

New Dungeons and Campaign Progression

The 1.0 release is substantial. According to the update, players now have access to more than a dozen new dungeons attached to major regions, each featuring its own progression, enemies, and bosses. The patch also introduces a new campaign progression system tied to branching quest choices, alongside a refreshed dialogue system intended to better support the game’s evolving structure.

A Bigger World to Explore

Beyond new content, version 1.0 significantly expands the world itself. The update adds dozens of new enemy types and abilities, more waypoints for easier traversal, and new exploration rewards scattered throughout the game. The map and atlas have also been improved to better track completion, including whether players have cleared attached dungeons or discovered secret bosses in each region.

More Build Variety and Customization

On the gameplay side, Ash & Rust continues leaning into build experimentation and mechanical depth. The developer highlights hundreds of gear pieces, augments, character traits, and crafting items that support a highly modular approach to character creation. Version 1.0 also adds more hand-slot items like rings and quivers, introduces a dye system for outfit customization, and gives summons unique minion visuals to help distinguish different build archetypes more clearly.

Core Systems and Quality-of-Life Improvements

Several core systems have also been refined. Ailments such as Bleed, Poison, Ignite, and Corruption have been reworked and retuned, while the previous dash has been replaced by a dodge roll system that can still be modified through gear. Inventory management has been expanded with new sub-tabs for campaign items, dungeon items, crafting materials, keys, and ingredients. Meanwhile, animation polish, visual effects, UI upgrades, and performance improvements — especially dynamic resolution — aim to make moment-to-moment play feel smoother and more responsive.

What Is Still Missing

Not everything made it into 1.0, however. The developer is upfront that multiplayer and its associated endgame mode are still in development and are planned for a future major release. Localization and voice acting are also absent from this version, with the post explaining that the game’s extensive dialogue trees, tooltips, menus, and procedurally generated augment text made those features too expensive and time-consuming to complete for launch.

A Promising Full Launch

Even with those omissions, Ash & Rust’s 1.0 launch reads like the arrival of a much larger and more fully realized ARPG experience. With thirteen regions, expanded dungeon content, deeper progression systems, and a renewed focus on quality-of-life improvements, the update positions the game as a passion project finally stepping into its full release phase — while still leaving room for even bigger features down the road.
